Effects  

A DMT HIGH USUALLY RESULTS IN (TACKETT, 2018):

• Altered perception of time and space.

• Feelings of intense joy.

• Visual and auditory hallucinations.

• Out-of-body experience.

• Perception of bright, intensified colors.

• Perceived insights or epiphanies (often believed to have come from aliens, divinities, or other mystical beings).    

Side effects and cautions

Some of the most common side-effects of DMT are elevated blood pressure and heart rate, which means that people suffering from any kind of cardiovascular disease should take serious precautions when taking DMT. Other side effects include dizziness, nausea, and lack of coordination. Ayahuasca may cause vomiting and diarrhea. Avoid driving a vehicle or using heavy machinery either while or immediately after the use of DMT.

DANGEROUS OR POTENTIALLY FATAL INTERACTIONS (THE THIRD WAVE, N.D.):

• Combination with lithium. Lithium is sometimes prescribed for bipolar and other mood disorders. DMT should never be taken by anyone who also taking Lithium. This combination has resulted in extremely dangerous psychological distress, including complete loss of contact with reality, psychotic symptoms and behavior, mania and delirium, and most concerning, seizures.

• DMT should not be taken in combination with SSRIs, high blood pressure drugs, appetite suppressants, medicine for breathing problems, central nervous system depressants, vasodilators, antipsychotic drugs, barbiturates, and alcohol.

Harm Reduction Tips

WHEN USING DMT KEEP IN MIND:

• Start low and go slow. You cannot judge content or purity by appearance, and DMT amounts can vary within each batch

• DMT causes vivid hallucinations so it is extremely important to have a sober “sitter” present who you know and trust and use in a safe and relaxing environment

• Individuals with a personal or family history of any psychotic disorder or nonpsychotic mania should avoid taking any psychedelic compounds, including DMT.

• Do not combine DMT with Lithium or SSRIs

WHEN SMOKING DMT:

• DMT smoke/vapor is harsh on the lungs, so use pipes with cooling chambers and do not hold in smoke – holding in smoke will not make you higher

• Clean and pre-warm pipes if they have been used before to avoid accidentally inhaling DMT or other substances from a previous session

• Use glass or metal pipes when possible to avoid fumes that may come from wood or plastic

COMBINATIONS

For the purposes of harm reduction, it is not advisable to combine substances. A combination of substances will not necessarily produce an equal mixing of effects. And is essentially a novel drug in its own right. Oftentimes combinations are not merely additive but produce “synergy”, where the effects are multiplied or exponential. There are some substances that should never be combined because they may produce toxic or potentially fatal effects. This should be taken into account if you choose to combine substances. So start with lower doses of each substance than you would usually take if taken alone.
